| July 17, 2010 CompleteColorado.com has obtained a letter from a group of citizens demanding a refund of previous donations to Dan Maes unless Maes offers more transparency into the campaign's finances, as well as his personal finances. The total figure of the donations at stake would be in the thousands of dollars. Maes faced stiff financial penalties from the Secretary of State's office because of allegations of campaign finance violations, many of them concerning large reimbursements for mileage. Eventually, $27,000 in fines was reduced to $17,500. But some who previously supported the underdog candidate continue to have lingering questions. Spokesperson Katherine Vitale said, "While we were initially very impressed with Dan and his message, his payment of such a large fine without opening the books is simply not acceptable or consistent with the message that appealed to us in the first place. As conservative voters, our cause is all about political accountability, this applies more especially to those who claim to carry our banner." The letter was hand delivered to the Maes offices this morning, but no one was in the office to accept the letter. It was deposited in the mail slot.
