"CRANK IT UP" RADIO SHOW PRESSURES RESPONSE FROM FRESHMAN REPRESENTATIVE

CompleteColorado.com has learned that the State House Democratic communications office quickly issued a brief release in response to questions raised by Jeff Crank on the "Crank It Up" radio show, 740 KVOR.

Crank asked Rep. Apuan to appear on the radio show, but Apuan declined the invitation. However, Crank did ask Apuan to clarify via email an entry on Apuan's Wikipedia page claiming that Apuan had been arrested for trespassing on a military base.

The Democratic communications office sent out the following response:

Statement from Rep. Dennis Apuan (D-El Paso)

Date: Fri, Mar 6, 2009

"Six years ago, long before I was an elected official, I participated in a peaceful prayer vigil at Peterson Air Force Base.

With a group of religious leaders, I peacefully expressed my opposition to the use of nuclear weapons.  We had hoped to hand out prayer cards to soldiers and we chose to step over the line marking Peterson Air Force Base property.  After just a few feet, four of us were arrested for trespassing. I was sentenced to 48 hours of community service, which I completed at my church teaching Sunday school.

I was peacefully exercising my first amendment rights to free speech."

The explanation hasn't mollified Crank however.

"Rep. Apuan was protesting against the mission these soldiers were working on. If he is proud of his past, he should embrace it. If not, he should apologize to the men and women who wear the uniform every day. For him to protest their work, and trespass on federal property before he was elected and then sponsor a resolution supporting them after being elected smacks of political posturing. Our fighting men and women are just too smart to fall for that," Crank said.
